Like all the students at Bright Light Academy Martin grew up In Rusinga East, still one of the poorest areas of the Island. His parents were unable to pay for school but luckily a generous relative helped him begin his education. At the age of sixteen his education was interrupted when his parents died and Martin became responsible for raising his six younger siblings. When finally able to completee his studies part time he earned a university degree in Early Childhood Development Education.
Martin met his wife Viola while both pursued their teaching degrees, sharing a mutual resolve to change young lives through learning. Viola contributes her skill and energies to almost every aspect of the Bright Light experience. The Chiefs and Elders in the Rusinga community, sharing Martin’s commitment to seeing that every child starts life with an education, donated the land where our school is situated.
There are not enough hours in the day since as well as being the Director of Bright Light Academy Martin is also its third-grade teacher, specializing in social studies, environmentalism, mathematics and government. His day begins at 4:30AM, preparing lessons and then travelling by motorbike to pick up the youngest students unable to walk the long distance to school. After school requires many hours of administrative management. There are always challenges, but the mission for both Martin and all the teachers and staff working with him since 2019 is more than worth it.
