Empowerment of Young Girls

Self-esteem is a key ingredient to maturity. Led by Bright Light Mentors Viola and Farida, through interactive sessions, creativity, and practical activities, girls are inspired to overcome challenges and pursue their aspirations with confidence.

Be a part of their futures,
and our students will become the women they want to be.

They discover their own worthiness as individuals. They reflect deeply within themselves during the class meditation. In private they keep personal diaries. They learn emotional tools such as managing their feelings, rejecting shame, empathizing with others, treating people with respect, and showing kindness. Good communication skills and confidence are already seen developing from the shy, giggling, or anxious personalities they came to the first class with. Our young girls discover how to set goals and face challenges and understand that resilience in the face of not meeting a goal is permission to try again.

These young girls recognize that their families, no matter how much they are loved, can present challenges to their independence, and that learning to share their feelings without fear can bring freedom of thought. They are encouraged to talk with their mothers about what they have learned in each class.

Importantly, our mentors understand that some of Bright Light Academy’s girls may have difficult home lives and experiences outside of school. Our mentors encourage them to set very careful boundaries with boys. To understand that their bodies are their own and no one else’s and are to be valued and protected. Whether from boys and men or from centuries’ old African customs such as female genital mutilation or having too many children they might not wish to have. Bright Light’s generation of empowered young girls are developing the leadership and life skills to speak to and uplift the next generation of young Kenyan women.
