find their purpose.

Many of Rusinga’s young boys begin their lives facing hardship. For some, basic survival is a daily challenge. They may stay hungry or live mostly outdoors, develop illnesses for which they will have no treatment or medicine. If they are orphans, as many are or what in Kenya are called vulnerable children, they may have the most minimal or no care from relatives or elderly guardians, most of whom lack the financial means to provide for their own large families.

If a young Rusinga boy is lucky enough to begin a Bright Light education, he can begin to see and then believe in a different life from what he ever imagined or was encouraged to imagine. For Bright Light’s boys, the promise of education is a lifeline. Our school provides the tools and helps them develop the skills to shape their futures as they grow and learn. Possibility becomes probability, as our teachers and mentors also help them set goals.
Comprehensive academic learning is fundamental at Bright Light but so are practical skills such as financial literacy and vocational training. Equally important is the cultivation of core values and principles, appreciating diversity, respect for women, active curiosity about the world, initiative and motivation.

By confronting early on difficult and very real local problems, such as harmful gender norms leading to abuse and violence, our young boys develop self-awareness of who they want to be in the world and how they want to live. They discover how to think first, then act. Bright Light is a holistic center of learning where young boys will realize their potential and find their purpose.
At Bright Light, economic empowerment and social responsibility play a vital role in a boy’s development. By training boys to have an entrepreneurial mindset, they will learn how they can gain financial independence and contribute to their communities. Encouraging volunteerism and environmental awareness fosters a sense of civic activism and global concern.
